2014 Communicator Of Achievment

Rebecca "Becky" Sarwate has been selected 2014 Communicator of Achievement by the Illinois Woman’s Press Association. This prestigious award is the highest honor given by the IWPA to members who have distinguished themselves within and beyond their profession.

Each year an award recipient, chosen from nominees selected by state affiliates is nationally recognized for exceptional achievement in the communications field, service to National Federation of Press Women and to the community. The COA Award winner and the runner-up are announced at the Communicator of Achievement Award Banquet scheduled during NFPW’s annual conference and awards banquet.

- Connie (Corcoran) Wilson -

A graduate of the University of Iowa, Berkeley, Western Illinois University, Northern Illinois University and the University of Chicago, she was film and book critic for the Quad City Times during the 70’s and 80’s. Her (Jan., 2011) nonfiction release It Came from the ‘70s: From The Godfather to Apocalypse Now consists of 50 reviews written during the seventies, with 76 photos, major cast and interactive trivia.

Connie’s continuing short story collection, Hellfire & Damna-tion, stories focused on the 9 Circles of Hell described in Dan-te's Inferno.

Prospect High School Wins the Silver Pen Award

The Anthology
of the Illinois Woman's Press Association

The Silver Pen Award is awarded to the school that has achieved the most award points among all student contest entrants.
The IWPA is proud to showcase the talented writers and members that have followed a journey that began in 1914 by lending their voices to the written word in "The Anthology".

Prospect High School in Mt. Prospect, Ill., whose faculty advisor is Jason Block, won the Silver Pen Award. This award is given to the school with the most student award recipients. Prospect High School students received 5 First Place, 4 Second Place, 3 Third Place and 3 Honorable Mention awards.

In the high school contest there were 63 entries in more than 20 newspaper, yearbook and video categories. 17 first place entries are going on to the national contest.

6:30 - 8:30 PM: The IWPA will team with the Chicago Writers Association for an event at Cavanaugh's (53 W. Jackson).
The theme will be the challenges related to trying to have it all (writing career, family, time for oneself) featuring guest speaker Heidi Stevens, a reporter and columnist at the Chicago Tribune, where she writes the daily Balancing Act column as well as feature stories about relationships, parenting and health. She is the author of Balancing Act: Essays on juggling life, love and work in a not-always obliging world, available at
