Tracey Ahrens had a work of art in the Faces of Hope art show and silent auction during the month of September at the Kankakee County Museum. The exhibit was named for Hope, a rescued gold retriever mix.

October is “National Domestic Violence Awareness Month” and Susan Brauer was interviewed by Mike Sanders on his radio program “Our Town” which is carried on “Chicago Progressive Talk”. They spoke about her odyssey of abuse and triumph, her book Just Keep Dancing; her 20 year relationship and marriage to her childhood sweetheart and how that relationship turned abusive and ultimately violent and dangerous; the pivotal event that changed everything; what can happen when one begins to make positive changes in their life; and that “it truly is never too late to live happily ever after”.

Cecilia Green retired in May from the Turnaround Management Association in Chicago after 10 years of directing their public relations department. She is now director of Arts in Bartlett’s Center for the Arts and has her own PR firm Evergreen Public Relations where she specializes in nonprofit publicity and special events. She can now be reached at cecgreen1@comcast.net.

Congratulations to Terry Haycock who was recently inducted into the Rho Kappa Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society. The ceremony took place in October at the Elgin Community College Performing Arts Center, Elgin, IL.

Jan Lisa Huttner dressed up for the third official “Jane Addams Day”

Jan Lisa Huttner dressed up for a Labor Day trip to Hull House in honor of American Girl’s new Rebecca Rubin doll. The third official “Jane Addams Day” in Illinois will be December 10, 2009. Among her many accomplishments, Jane Adams was one of the founding members of IWPA.

Congratulations to Cynthia Ogorek. She received the 2009 “Distinguished Friend of South Suburban Heritage” award at the South Suburban Heritage Association’s 23rd annual cultural history conference.

Ogorek is the owner of The Public Historian based in Calumet City and has been a practicing historian in the southern suburbs of Chicago for over twenty years.

On Saturday, October 17, 2009, IWPA members Mary T. Wagner (Running with Stilettos; Living a Balanced Life in Dangerous Shoes) and Rachel Madorsky (Symphony of Your Karma and Create Your Own Destiny) were among nine Chicago authors sharing their stories during “Meet the Authors Day” at the Beverly Library in Chicago. The event was co-sponsored by Beverly Library and the Chicago Writers Association of which another IWPA member Randy Richardson (Lost in the Ivy) is the current president.

Wagner also won a Silver award in the “humor” category of the national 2009 Independent Publisher Book Awards competition for Running with Stilettos and second place in the Royal Palms Literary Awards contest. The essay she wrote for MORE.com about going to law school at 40 and eventually arguing a case to the state Supreme Court earned second place in the Short Nonfi ction category.

Wagner also was interviewed on southeastern Wisconsin’s The Morning Blend and by Commissioner Frank Avila on Avila Book Talk, a program on Chicago’s community cable channel 19, CAN-TV. Congratulations, Mary. It seems to be your year!

Marianne Wolf-Astrauskas was appointed Director of Membership for NFPW, which means she has a seat on the national board. Congratulations, Marianne.
