National Federation of Press Women Announces 2018 High School Communications Contest Winners

Chicago – May 18, 2018 –The Illinois Woman’s Press Association (IWPA), an affiliate of the National Federation of Press Women (NFPW) is proud to announce the state’s winners in the national High School Communications Contest. The annual competition honors and celebrates student journalists and the communications programs of their respective schools.

For the 2018 contest period, IWPA accepted 113 entries in 23 different categories from students of all genders attending public and private schools across Illinois. This year 17 first-place state winners were eligible to compete in the national competition hosted by NFPW.

Here are the results of the national judging:

1^st Place – Yearbook Photo, Yearbook Copywriting: Katrina Troy, Hunley High School

2^nd Place – Radio Prepared Report: Gabrielle Caldanaro, Homewood-Flossmoor High School

3^rd Place – Reviews: Madeline Crabtree, Brittany Coates, Metea Valley High School

3^rd Place – Graphics/ Photo Illustration: Kennedy Homan, Metea Valley High School

3^rd Place – Video Sports Story: Zac Lueder, Homewood-Flossmoor High School

Honorable Mention – Sports Story: Ben Bowler, Adele Lee, Adlai E. Stevenson High School

Honorable Mention – Best Newscast Radio or Television: Isabella Cangiolosi, Andrew Burkey, Bryce Dalton, Nick Decatoire, Blake Kellinger, Madison Kerley, Justin Mehlhop, Huntley High School

“IWPA is bursting with pride over the success of our local winners in the NFPW high school communications contest!” said President Cora Weisenberger. “Our organization is honored to provide a way of showcasing the exceptional work being accomplished by student communicators and their advisors.”

The winners will be invited to accept their awards at the NFPW High School Contest Awards Luncheon as part of the 2018 Conference. The NFPW’s largest communications event will take place in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania this year on September 8-9.

The Illinois Woman’s Press Association, founded in 1885, is an organization of communications professionals whose objective is to maintain and improve the professional standards of members in mass communications in Illinois, to promote their interest, and to provide for the sharing of ideas and information. IWPA is an affiliate of the National Federation of Press Women.
